Correspondence with the Assistant Editors, 1946-1951
Scope and Contents
In addition to other celebratory events, the Executive Committee recommended that the complete writings of Jefferson be published to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth. Kimball was a member of the Advisory Committee appointed to oversee this undertaking. While planning began on "The Papers of Thomas Jefferson" as early as 1940, the first volume did not appear until 1950 (as of 2002, only 29 of the planned 50 volumes have been published).
The records are comprised primarily of correspondence between Advisory Committee members and with the editor, Julian P. Boyd; assistant editors, Lyman H. Butterfield and Mina R. Bryan; publisher, Princeton University; and sponsor, the New York Times. Other material includes brochures, memos, proof pages, and an early report by Julian P. Boyd documenting the need for and feasibility of the project.
