Architectural projects, 1874, 1906-1956, undated

Records in this series document the various facets of Kimball's work as practicing architect and architectural advisor. The series includes material on the many historical restoration projects with which Kimball was involved, including most significantly Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg. In addition, there is material on the restoration of several Colonial and Early Republican homes, specifically Dumbarton House, Gunston Hall, Moors' End, the Octagon, Stratford Hall, Tryon's Palace, and Carroll Mansion at Homewood. Kimball undertook most of these projects with the assistance of his long-time architectural partner, Erling H. Pedersen. The series also includes Kimball's architectural drawings and other documents for various design-build projects, including his own home Shack Mountain and several early cabins and homes for individual clients. Kimball served for four years as Supervising Architect for the University of Virginia, and for nearly thirty years as University Architect for New York University. His work in these capacities is also documented here. Finally, the series documents Kimball's advisory role on two national monuments, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C. and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis.
