Art historical and historical projects, 1920-1954, undated
Scope and Contents
This series documents Kimball's role as advocate, advisor and/or committee member in various projects pertaining to art, art history, or American history. Two series, "Thieme-Becker" and "Corpus of Florentine Painting" demonstrate Kimball's sympathy toward German scholars of art history who were experiencing difficulty after World War I. In both cases, Kimball became advocate and fund-raiser for these scholarly works. In the case of the Rockefeller Center Advisory Art Committee, Kimball acted as advisor to help in the selection of artists to carry through a decorative program for this complex of buildings. The last three series all concern Kimball's involvement with celebratory events surrounding the 200th anniversary of Thomas Jefferson's birth. Kimball helped to organize events at a national and state level in Pennsylvania. He also was involved with a special exhibition celebrating Jefferson's life held at the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
