Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Dumbarton House was built around 1800 in the Federal style, and is located in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The house was purchased in 1928 by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America to serve as the association's headquarters. The Society hired local architect Horace W. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: These records document Kimball's involvement as first Chair (1945-1947), and later Member (1948-1950), of the American Institute of Architect's Committee on Restoration of the Octagon. The Octagon (1799-1801) was designed by William Thorton as a residence for Col. John Tayloe III and in 1899, became the Institute's headquarters. Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series: Stratford Hall, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, was built between 1730 and 1738 in the Georgian style. In 1929, the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association was incorporated as a non-profit organization and purchased Stratford, with the intent of restoring the Great House and outbuildings to create a memorial for the General of the Conferderate Army. Of particular note are folders reagrding Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pa; the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in St. Louis, Missouri; Jamestown, Virginia; the White House; and Thomas Jefferson's birthplace and home, Shadwell and Monticello, both outside of Charlottesville, Virginia.
