Scope and Contents
A result of ten years of study, Kimball's seminal book on the Rococo was published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1943. Noted art historians Lionello Venturi and Erwin Panofsky praised Kimball and his work in distinguishing the Rococo style from the Baroque and for assigning artists to previously unattributed works. The book's publication and much of Kimball's travel expenses were funded by the American Council of Learned Societies. His dealings with the organization are documented in correspondence and material related to his grant applications, including endorsements from Venturi and Panofsky. The records also include correspondence with the printer, a corrected typescript, book reviews, and information about the distribution and sales of the book.
