Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

The "Annual reports" files consist primarily of Kimball's drafts of the various sections included in each report. Almost all of the files contain the manuscript and an edited typescript of the Report of the Director of the Museum. Many also include the Board of Trustees Report, which although signed by the museum president, was drafted by Kimball. An assortment of lists and reports, which Kimball probably used as reference, is also included. There are no files for the 1951-1952 and 1952-1953 annual reports.

Over the course of Kimball's tenure, the museum's Bulletin was published at various intervals. In addition to carrying the annual reports beginning in 1949, the Bulletin often incorporated the museum's "Handbook of the Collections," although some, such as the 1931 handbook documented below, were issued separately. Unlike the annual reports, Kimball was not the sole author of the museum's Bulletin. Most of the curatorial staff and department heads contributed articles. These files appear to consist primarily of the drafts of the articles Kimball wrote. In addition to manuscripts and typescripts, a few files contain a small amount of correspondence, proofs of articles, Bulletin reprints, or photographs. The "Publicity" sub-subseries contains documentation of articles about the museum appearing in other publications.

The last publication documented in this group, Masterpieces of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, was never published.
