Building caissons, piles and caps. Specifications, November 7, 1938
Scope and Contents
These files contain brochures, clippings, correspondence, specifications, and vouchers related to Kimball's work as a member of the Jefferson Memorial Commission. A significant portion of the material relates to the controversial selection of a site for the memorial on the south bank of the Tidal Basin in 1937, and the equally contentious selection of John Russell Pope's pantheon-like design for the memorial. The correspondence files contain many letters with Daniel Paul Higgins and Otto R. Eggers, the architects who took over construction following Pope's death in August 1937. The subseries also includes a significant amount of technical information on the building's superstructure and caisson piles, and information about the inscriptions.
