Scope and Contents

While professor and head of the Department of Architecture and Fine Arts at the University of Virginia, Kimball also served as Supervising Architect for the University. Records in this subseries document his role in the design and construction of McIntire Amphitheatre, Memorial Gymnasium, and Faculty Apartments. In addition, there is material pertaining to his design of an unbuilt engineering building, renovations to the hospital and medical school complex, and two University of Virginia fraternity houses. These projects were undertaken with the assistance of Kimball's architectural associate, S. J. Makielski. The series also includes information about Kimball's role as advisor on the construction of the Students Activity Building during the late 1940s.
