United States postal stamp competition, 1953-1954, undated

In April 1954, Kimball was asked by United States Postmaster General Summerfield to oversee the United States Post Office's Program of Competition for the design of a limited number of postage stamps. The program was a collaboration between the Post Office and the Commission of Fine Arts, and offered an opportunity, according to Kimball, "to disseminate better taste...and to encourage the best artistic talent of the country by employing artists of ability." During his short involvement with the project, Kimball helped to define the program and identified potential artists and jurors to participate. The files are comprised primarily of his correspondence with staff of the Post Office and the Fine Arts Commission. He resigned in September because the project lacked the necessary enthusiasm and financial support from the Post Office.
