Essays in Honor of Hans Tietze, 1949-1954, undated

Kimball served on the festal committee overseeing the production of "Essays in Honor of Hans Tietze," a Festschrift produced in honor of the 70th birthday of Hans Tietze (1880-1954), Kimball's close friend and art historical colleague. As a committee member, Kimball advised Julius S. Held and the other editors on the selection of authors, negotiated for the volume's publication, and contributed the essay, "The Beginnings of the Style Pompadour," a supplement of sorts to his seminal book The Creation of the Rococo. While Kimball's essay was published separately by the Gazette des Beaux Arts in 1954, the entire volume did not appear until 1958, eight years after the event it was meant to commemorate, and three and four years following the respective deaths of Kimball and Tietze.

The material is comprised of Kimball's correspondence with Held, Tietze, the Gazette des Beaux Arts, and the Museum of Modern Art. There are also outlines and drafts from many of the essays, including those by E. H. Gombrich, Meyer Schapiro, and Paul Zucker. The manuscript and typescript for Kimball's essay is also included.
