In July of 1985, the Philadelphia Museum of Art acquired over 43,000 European prints from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts through an exchange and purchase with funds Muriel and Philip Berman. A year later, Ellen Jacobowitz, Acting Curator of Prints, organized an exhibition of old master prints selected from the recent acquisition.
