Mary Cassatt, Philadelphia-born artist, was the only American ever invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists. Eventually, she settled in Paris, but Philadelphia remains the largest repository of her work, and she played a pivotal role in encouraging Philadelphia-area collectors to acquire Impressionist paintings despite the critical attitudes taken by her contemporaries.
