In the late 1960s, Goodrich contacted the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery, asking each for x-rays of their paintings by Eakins. According to those letters, Goodrich wanted this material for his current study of the artist's technical methods and to build a collection of such x-rays since there were so few to analyze Eakins's works.
