Scope and Contents
General correspondence primarily from and to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, but also the Museum of Modern Art (co-organizer of the exhibition) and the Art Institute of Chicago (third venue of the exhibition). Topics covered include preliminary exhibition ideas; provenance and biographical research on Duchamp and his works; press coverage of the exhibition; thank-you notes; and visitor responses to the exhibition. Also includes several cover letters from various correspondents forwarding copies of Duchamp's correspondence and other reference material. There is a significant amount of correspondence with Alexina Duchamp, widow of Marcel Duchamp, concerning the planning of the exhibition, as well as her gift of Duchamp material to the museum.
