Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

By 1934, the year he wrote his final article for Antiques magazine, Kimball already was planning to assemble these writings and any later related findings into a book devoted to McIntire furniture. Based on comments in the preface to his 1940 publication of McIntire's architectural designs, Kimball still was planning to write such a volume. Although the book never came to fruition, Kimball compiled files for it, pulling much of the material he originally used for the articles, particularly the photographs marked up as figure illustrations. Identified by Kimball's working title for the intended publication, this sub-subseries consists of those files.

Some of the more frequent correspondents include the private collectors George Alfred Cluett and Maxim and Martha Codman Karolik, and Massachusetts antique dealers Frances Nichols of the King Hooper Mansion Galleries and Katrina Kipper. There is also a significant number of letters with Israel Sack, from both his New York and Boston firms. The brief descriptions intended to accompany figure illustrations appear to be for the book since the text differs from that in the Antiques magazine articles for similar entries. These writings are identified in the folder title as manuscripts (Ms). The sub-subseries ends with "Publication" files that include drafts of the book's preface and background on McIntire's life and works.
