Photographs, undated

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series includes prints, storage envelopes, and glass plate negatives, and a few film negatives documenting a large portion of John G. Johnson's art collection. From visual information included in some of the negatives (but cropped out of the prints), it can be presumed that some of the images were produced at Johnson's home and perhaps during his lifetime. Two groups of photographic material make up this series: material that was stored with curatorial records and like photographic material stored by the Rights and Reproductions department and transferred into this collection at the time of processing. The subseries "Negatives" and "Prints" constitute photographic material that had been stored with the curatorial records. "Prints" consists exclusively of copy prints. Associated storage envelopes are filed with the glass plate negatives in the "Negatives" subseries. Of the material that was transferred to the Archives from Rights and Reproductions, the "Active" photographic material was used most recently by the department of Rights and Reproductions at the time of their transfer. "Inactive" photographic material had been superceded by more recent reproductions at the time of their transfer to the Archives. "Prints from Rights and Reproductions, active" and Prints from Rights and reproductions, inactive" consist of both copy prints and storage envelopes, while "Negatives from Rights and Reproductions, active" and "Negatives from Rights and Reproductions, inactive" consist solely of glass plate negatives.
