Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This subseries contains McIlhenny's, and to a lesser extent Bernice Wintersteen's, tax files. The bulk consists of federal income tax files and includes tax forms, reports, notes, inventories, appraisals, and correspondence. Most of the correspondence is with Ballard, Spahr, Andrews & Ingersol. Other correspondents include Cooke and Bieler, the United States Treasury Department, Girard Bank and First Pennsylvania Bank. There is also a significant amount of correspondence with the various organizations and institutions receiving charitable contributions, which sometimes were made as deeds of gift of art objects. As documented here, the most frequent recipients of McIlhenny's largesse were the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to which he donated numerous works of art over time, the Academy of Music, the Metroplitain Opera, and two of his alma maters, Milton Academy and Harvard University.

McIlhenny's federal income tax files span the years of 1938 to 1985. City of Philadelphia wage and federal unemployment tax files date from the 1940s to the 1980s. Less extensive files include city taxations on personal property, real estate, school income and water and sewer rents, as well as federal gift and state income taxes. Bernice Wintersteen's material includes federal income tax files from 1953 to 1966, and other city and federal filings.
