Biographical / Historical
Leopold Seyffert, Jr., also known as Richard Seyffert, was born in Philadelphia in 19l5. His talent in art was apparent at an early age. He came to New York and studied at the National Academy with Leon Kroll and Gifford Beal. World War II found him in a Navy uniform as a photographer’s mate, after which he lived in Bolivia and Peru.
It is likely that Seyffert went to war and then visited the Arensberg home after hostilities had ended and his military service was coming to a close. This is consistent, in a general way, with photos in the Arensberg Archives of soldiers visiting from an art therapy class at nearby Birmingham hospital.
In 1950, Seyffert established a studio at the National Arts Club in New York City.
