Thomas Jefferson, 1913-1954, undated

This subseries is comprised of Kimball's research and publications regarding United States President Thomas Jefferson. A subject of life-long interest, Kimball worked diligently to establish in print Jefferson's importance as an architect. In addition, he wrote extensively on Jefferson's interest in the arts, including music and painting; compiled and published an authoritative account of the portraits of Jefferson painted and sculpted from life; and sought to establish Shadwell as Jefferson's place of birth. Marie Kimball collaborated with her husband on Jefferson research throughout their lives, as demonstrated by the many research notes in her hand found throughout the Articles sub-subseries. Of special interest is the folder "Thomas Jefferson and the First Monument of the Classical Revival in America" which includes the manuscript, typescript and published version of Kimball's PhD dissertation for the University of Michigan concerning Jefferson's design for the State Capitol at Richmond, Virginia.
