Abstract

This collection documents the activities of FOCUS: Philadelphia Focuses on Women in the Visual Arts, a city-wide arts program that occurred in April and May of 1974. The records in the FOCUS collection date from 1972 to 1975 and include meeting minutes from various FOCUS committees, outreach and advertising documents, correspondence, and records of the grant application process.

George Grey Barnard Papers

Abstract

George Grey Barnard was an American sculptor and collector of Medieval art. He located and arranged the pieces that eventually became "The Cloisters" for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His papers are comprised primarily of correspondence and financial and business records documenting both his collecting and creation of art. The collection includes a significant amount of personal correspondence, biographical information, and family financial records as well.

George M. Cheston Records

Abstract George M. Cheston was President of the museum from 1968 to 1977, a very active period. During his presidency the Student Center, a new restaurant, and new air-conditioning facilities were installed. In addition, preparations for the museum's Centennial took place. J. Stogdell Stokes Records

Abstract J. Stogdell Stokes was President, a member of the Board of Trustees, and Chairman of the Museum Fund of 1928. Under his guidance the Museum acquired the Barnard and Foulc collections. With WPA craftsmen, period rooms were installed and galleries completed. The records are correspondence covering 11 years of his administration. Julius Zieget was Secretary of the Corporation from 1928 to 1963, and was appointed Treasurer in 1934. Zieget's files reflect his varied activities, and comprise transactions with city, state, and private foundations for support, budget and funding reports, gift acknowledgements, exhibition records, and extensive bequest files.

Langdon Warner Records

Langdon Warner, a scholar of Asian art and an archaeologist, was Director of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art from 1917 to 1923. Warner also served as Curator of the Wilstach Collection. The Langdon Warner records contain correspondence of Langdon Warner, museum Director between 1917 and 1923, and E. Hamilton Bell, Acting Director during Warner’s absence while he traveled in Asia.
