The Conservation Department Records are the physical property of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Archives. The Museum holds literary rights only for material created by Museum personnel or given to the Museum with such rights specifically assigned. For all other material, literary rights, including copyright, belong to the authors or their legal heirs and assigns. Researchers are responsible for obtaining permission from rights holders for publication and for other purposes where stated.

Biographical / Historical

The Conservation Department was established in 1966 under Theodor Siegl, who was initially hired as a part-time conservator in 1955. Prior to Siegl becoming a full-time conservator, individual conservators were contracted as needed. From 1955 to 1966, Siegl and his growing staff of assistants were aligned with the Painting and Sculpture Department. In 1978 Marigene Butler became Conservator and also in 1978 a new Conservation Laboratory was opened.
